Eating: Hot Sauce and Panko
CRAVE: Panko Parmesan Wings
For me, there will always be a soft spot for restaurants that pull off a specific niche.
Sure, anyone can cater to the taste buds of the masses with a mix of appetizers, sides, entres. Maybe there’s soups, salads, meaty mains, burgers, pizza, sandwiches, and more depending on the cuisine.
Where it really gets interesting is when a spot specializes in just one thing.
Hot Sauce and Panko is one of those spots.
And their speciality? Chicken wings.
The spot offers over 20 kinds of wings. TWENTY. That takes some ingenuity and skill to cook up those combinations.
Flavors include — prepare yourselves — Yaki (teriyaki), Green (cilantro, jalapeno, ginger, sesame oil, spice mix), Chris’s (honey, salty, crispy, black pepper), Lime, Mango, Satay, Chipotle, Thai, Garlic Bacon Parmesan (!) and Beer among a few others. The even have a Raw Ghost Pepper flavor for those that really like it hot.
There’s also some unique breadings you can get these babies cased in including ramen and bacon-wrapped versions.
Hot Sauce and Panko used to be in the Richmond, frighteningly far from many of San Francisco’s neighborhoods. Their recent move, however, has brought them to the center of the city, nestled in between Russian and Nob Hill neighborhoods.
It’s new location fits, giving off a cozy, family vibe that matches the quaintness of the neighborhood. Walking in, you see the employees working away in the open kitchen, inviting you to watch as they whip together wings. Hot sauces line the walls and two lone tables provide a spot to quickly down your wings.
Unfortunately, only open till 7pm, it can be hard to find the right dining time to get your wing fix. We found ourselves stuck in the hungry between-lunch-and-dinner limbo one Sunday and Hot Sauce and Panko came to the rescue.
Blocks away you will smell this place — don’t be fooled, the scent of fresh waffles and fried goodness is definitely coming from Hot Sauce and Panko.
Even though their speciality is wings, they’ve managed to slip in a few other items. Another must-try is their Ultra Goliath Waffle Sandwich with chicken karage, cabbage, and siracha-caramel sushi sauce between tow thick waffles. There is also a classic Chicken & Gravy Waffle Sandwich and fish ‘n chips as well.
Come hungry, grab a bag of goodies and indulge from this oasis of all things fried.
