EATING: Patio Picnic dinner at Starbelly // CRAVE: That succulent, moist pork!
I love finding new, unique dining opportunities around San Francisco. With summer in full swing, so many restaurants are putting together barbeques, grill outs, and special menus that take advantage of all the fresh, seasonal ingredients. I heard about an amazing roast piglet picnic dinner series at Starbelly and knew that would help satisfy my summer meal cravings!
Every year Starbelly puts together several picnic dinners starting in early May with additional picnics throughout the summer.
The main meal always focuses around a Devil’s Gulch Roasted piglet from Marin-based Devil’s Gulch Ranch. If you’ve never had a fresh, just-roasted pig, this is your chance!
The rest of the meal usually includes different picnic sides like summer salads, veggies, and fruit cobblers. Here’s a sneak peek at what you can get into.
The whole picnic is very well organized. You buy tickets in advance through their events page, but are seated at a specific table when you arrive with your group. You feel part of one dining experience with the other 40 or so guests, but still get to have an intimate dinner with your friends or family.
Personally I loved this since it saved you the time of jostling for a spot or trying to figure out where to sit. After most of the guests have arrived, everyone joins a line and serves themselves family style from all the picnic goodies.
Our picnic included delicious green and yellow bean salad, with some fresh herbs and oils. Fresh and light!
One of my favorite sides was their potato salad which included purple and white potatoes, celery, and onions smothered with delicious mayo aioli concoction. This was SO good.
The meal was balanced with some sweet freshly grilled peaches and arugula. Just the right amount of softness to melt in your mouth.
What’s a meal without carbs? Crumbly, sweet-but-spicy jalapeno cornbread was another side.
The chef himself is right there carving up slices of pig to complete your meal. Make sure to through a dash of the spicy oil on top!
What would a meal be without brews? Starbelly brings in a local brewer for each picnic who offers beers for an additional $3 each. Our meal specifically had beers from Headlands Brewing, accompanied by one of brewers to tell us about the drinks. (Wines and cocktails can also be purchased off the regular Starbelly menu.)
The best part? Get as many servings of food as you want! The whole atmosphere is so relaxed and casual, grab a little bit more of your favorite bites, but save room for dessert!
The dessert we sampled was warm, blackberry-strawberry cobbler with an oatmeal crumb topping.
Overall, this is a great San Francisco summer dining experience. Starbelly’s patio is absolutely adorable, and definitely one that can keep you warm. Ample amount of natural lighting creep in through the light, fabric roof, and is the perfect ambiance for any meal during golden hour.
If you miss out on the summer patio picnics make sure to find an excuse to experience this cozy, cute spot!
