Adventure: “Point Break Live!” comedy show/play at DNA Lounge
This show is absolutely hilarious. Like any other big city, San Francisco has its share of plays, musicals, symphonies and ballets that one can see. Shows like “Point Break Live,” however, are in a class all of their own and a lot rarer to come by.
For those of you that don’t know, “Point Break” is a cult classic ’90s film featuring Keanu Reeves who plays a FBI agent Johnny Utah brought to Southern California to help solve a string of robberies. Keanu and his partner suspect that a crew of surfers might be the culprits and proceed to infiltrate the local surf scene to solve the case. At the time the movie was released it was a serious action/drama, but since then the one-liners, comedic absurdity of surfer criminals, and just having Keanu in the movie, period, have made this movie a gem.
“Point Break Live” creates 2 hours of absurdity from the film. The show begins with the “director” recruiting an audience member to play Johnny Utah. Utah is given help from Cue Card Girl who whips out cue cards with his lines and helps him through the various scenes throughout the show. The surfers, Utah’s FBI partner, and love interest, Tyler, all pull out the stops to deliver an edgy, slightly altered version of the film with funny, borderline inappropriate moments. If you are in the first 4 rows of the audience expect to get a really interactive performance: expect splash zone water, a squirt of fake blood, and maybe a little surfer manhandling.
The show happens the first Friday of every month. Just go.
