ADVENTURE: Cochon555 Heritage BBQ // EATING: All the meats!! // CRAVE: Andouille sausage!
Nothing is better if you love meat than an event like the Heritage BBQ. With tons of foodie festivals happening in the Bay Area over the course of the year, it can be hard to decide which events to check out! If you love all kinds of meats, unique cocktails, and flavorful wines, this is the festival for you!
The Heritage BBQ is put on by Cochon555, a group focused on educating and celebrating locally sourced heritage breed pigs through events across North America. Now in its 4th year, the Heritage BBQ helps bring a variety of different categories of BBQ restaurants together for grill-off competitions in 20 major cities, with a portion of ticket sales being donated to charities.
In San Francisco, the Heritage BBQ works closely with Magnolia Brewery and their BBQ spot, Smokestack. Magnolia Brewery lies on the outskirts of the Dogpatch neighborhood, a hidden gem bringing together rustic and industrial vibes with a massive bar, open ceilings, and exposed metal + wood features. Personally, it’s one of my favorite spots to pop into for a good beer and some BBQ any weekend, even if there’s not a totally amazing BBQ festival going on.
Entering the festival, half a street block is closed off outside with several tents of food + cocktail tastings and live music. Taking a step inside, the brewery has opened up the large back room to hold tons of different stations serving up different BBQ creations.
A comforting bowl of pozole.
Pork belly sandwiches.
Wagyu lettuce cups.
The number of wines and cocktails you can try is incredible! Some delicious pinots, smokey old-fashioned, + delectable Don Julio margaritas.
Self-serve cocktails — squeeze up a baser and drink up!
Getting that smokey flavor absorbed into the glass of jars.
Throughout the evening, the judges tasted different dishes from five different chefs competing for the title of San Francisco’s “King of BBQ.” In the end chefs Paul Piscopo and Ken Tominaga of Pabu won it all!
Mark your calendars for this yearly SF event, or follow them around the country at each of their pitstops! For more event details and videos, visit the Cochon 555 website or follow @cochon555 on Twitter and Instagram.
