We’ve all been there; it’s Sunday morning, you’ve just woken up and already starving. You want something delicious, maybe savory or maybe sweet, but the thought of facing San Francisco’s epic brunch lines is horrible and your kitchen is bare. Empty fridge, nothing in your cupboards, what’s a hungry San Franciscan to do?! Enter: Baker Doe.
Baker Doe is a new bakery option that is currently delivering pastries every weekend to your doorstep. The bakers are a husband and wife duo who are keeping their identities relatively secret to play into the mystery of their business name, Baker Doe (a play on the phrase “John Doe”). He has a background running bars while she is a former pastry chef at Dosa with an Asian heritage that influences her pastries. Together they’ve got all the savvy to run a successful SF bakery!
The two have been cooking pastries for a few months now out of a communal restaurant kitchen, baking on Saturdays and delivering on Sundays. Menus are posted on their Facebook Page on Fridays with preorders taken from Friday till Saturday evening. Currently, they are looking at different shop locations to open a brick-and-mortar location, but until then the delicious deliveries continue!
Baker Doe definitely specializes in amazing croissants and danishes. Flavors are inspired by Asian dishes and ingredients like their Salted Duck Yolk Sweet CustardCroissant (奶黄流沙), a take on a similar dim sum dish filled with egg yolk. (Yes, there is an egg yolk inside!)
My favorite was the Ham & Cheese Croissant with rosemary ham and aged Emmental — flaky, buttery and the rosemary flavors really come out in this pastry!
One croissant flavor I’ve never seen is matcha. Baker Doe has this flavor covered! They whip up a delicious Chocolate Matcha Dipped Croissant filled with matcha cream. So pretty!
Three of the croissants look similar with a textured outside covered in powdered sugar, but really are all exciting, different flavors. Loved their Coconut-Ginger Double Baked Croissant with thick layers of grated coconut that reminded me of a Girl Scout Samoa cookie. Instead of a regular almond croissant, Baker Doe takes it to the next level with an Almond-Lemongrass Double Baked Croissant topped with tons of almond slivers. Finally, they have an amazing Pear-Gorgonzola Walnuts Double Baked Croissant!
If you love plain butter croissants they have those too — but, the butter is an extra special imported Isigny butter that has a unique nutty flavor and is perfect for the lamination of croissants. The butter melts in your mouth and not your hands, taking even this simple treat to the next level.
The danishes are also delicious. Three of the unique flavors are a Sour Cherries Vanilla Pastry Cream Danish, a Strawberry-Rhubarb Vanilla Pastry Cream Danish, and a Hickory Smoked Chocolate Créme Brûlée Danish! The middle of the last one is literally glazed over like the top of a créme brûlée dessert!
Finally, if you want something sinfully delicious and rich try their tarts! These almost taste like mini-cheesecakes to me, with amazing graham cracker crusts. Flavors of tarts include Vietnamese Coffee Lava Tarts and Matcha Lava Tarts.
Order minimums are $20 and can be made on Baker Doe’s Facebook Page, first to order first to serve! Get the inside taste before these guys grab a brick-and-mortar and blow up the San Francisco baking scene!
